Modern Craftsman
As the name suggests, this design style showcases fine craftsmanship. Like its exterior, the interior of a craftsman home is fairly understated. Having historic roots, the Craftsman style home was popularized at the turn of the 20th century by architect and furniture designer Gustav Stickley in his magazine, The Craftsman. Once defined as a house “reduced to its simplest form,” the styling removed ornamentation so that the craftmanship showed through. These homes incorporate simple finishes that even the "common man" could afford that are customized to be unique and beautiful.
Today, the increased interest and awareness in sustainability makes Modern Craftsman an engaging way to adopt elements of traditional craftsmanship using local, natural green materials.
Architectural elements like exposed wood beams, dormers and a front porch gable are distinctive elements of craftsman style houses. Thick crown moldings and fireplaces are staples in a craftsman environment.
